2019 Interviews with John McGhee
[This was a set of video interviews done by John McGhee with Christy Woods and put together and posted to Youtube. John is narrator and interviewer, so unless otherwise marked, the words are John's. The video consists of clips spliced together because there were times it was too traumatic for Christy to continue.]
************ It's June 2019, and this is Christy Woods, who at the age of 11 signed a billion-year contract and joined Scientology's Sea Org. At the age of 12, she'd given birth to her first of six children. (Because of the distressing nature of what Ms. Woods has to relive, to tell her story, many breaks will have to be taken and this talk will have to be conducted over several sessions over several days, so that Ms. Woods can regain her composure both emotionally and physically. And this may result in some overlap or repetition of questions because we may have to break off at a point where she becomes upset and we have to continue elsewhere.) You were born, Christy Woods, into a Scientologist family, and you were the youngest of six children. What were your parents names? C: Ben and Carrie Anne. So describe your childhood. Were you home-schooled? Were you sent to - C: Home-schooled. (?) And, did you mix with other children? C: Other Scientology kids. So, were they in your home regularly? C: Yes. Were your parents staffmembers in Scientology? C: I'm not sure what they did. But your mom was a full-time home-school teacher? C: Yes. So she did that five days a week? C: Uh, four. Okay. Eleven (11) years of age you signed the billion-year contract for Scientology's Sea Organization... C: Yes. And four days after your 12th birthday, you gave birth to your first of six children? C: Yes Uh - Who was your rapist and father of your six children? C: David Miscavige. How did your parents know David Miscavige? C: I'm not sure how they knew, but he had been at my house a few times. And he assumed leadership of the cult of Scientology in 1986 after L. Ron Hubbard died. 1986 was a very significant year for you. Can you describe that? Did you join the Cadet Org or join the Sea Org? C: I joined the Sea Org at the end of '86. Under pressure from your parents? C: Yes. What options did they give you? What if you did not want to join the Sea Org? What was the other option for you? C: "Kid wants to go to an orphanage, so we figure anything's going to be better than that." (seems to be quoting what was said around her) So they delivered you into the hands of a rapist and a pedophile, David Miscavige... C: Yes. And they were never made aware of this. They never came looking for you... C: Not to my knowledge. Scientology specializes in breaking up families. When did he first visit you? C: Spring of '87. Spring of '87 - would have made you 11 years of age. And you were living where? C: At the Fort Harrison. Did you have a roommate at the Fort Harrison? C: Yes. And where was she when David Miscavige visited you? C: Not there. So can you describe what happened? C: About a half an hour before he would come, she'd get called away somewhere, for something. So he visited you regularly at Fort Harrison hotel? C: Yeah. How many times before he decided to move you to Gold Base? C: Not long. Just - I got pregnant. And he found out you got pregnant. He moved you. How were you convinced to withhold your pregnancy from your parents, at 11 years of age? C: I didn't want to make contact with my parents. Did you not see them, considering that they were in the Florida area at the time? C: I saw them occasionally, but that was cut off. How were you not compelled to tell them what was happening to you? C: That was threatened. Threatened by who? C: David. How did he threaten you? C: That he'd hurt me and my parents. So he knew your parents very well? In what capacity? C: I don't know. I was too young to know what my parents' relationship is. You were 11, that would have made him 26 years of age? Now he had only freshly assumed the throne of Scientology leadership at that point... C: Yep. He must have felt himself entitled enough to have you as what is essentially a sex slave. C: Yes. Can you describe the last memories you have of your parents? C: They just came to see me, and we sat and talked, and they said "See you next weekend" and that's the last I saw of them. And this was at the Fort Harrison? C: Yes. Before you were driven in a van to California? C: Yes. Now can you talk about how David Miscavige manipulated your parents in order for them to be convinced to sign you over to the Sea Org? C: He said that I had a different purpose. And for that to happen, I couldn't have any contact with my family anymore. Can you describe the room you were kept in? C: (The) room was a... simple room - had a bathroom off of it. Did it have windows? C: They were blacked out. So you didn't get any sunlight whatsoever? C: Mmm - no. Describe your everyday routine, whilst locked in this room. C: Get up at 7:00. Have breakfast. Whatever. Who instructed you to arise? C: The guard. And what if you just did not feel like doing it? C: Then I got punished. In what way? C: Chained to the post, bed. How did your day begin? C: Breakfast... It wasn't much of a day - breakfast, dinner... So you were fed twice a day? C: Yeah. Can I ask, what were you fed? C: Beans and rice, powdered milk. So you were fed the Sea Org diet. C: Yes. Were you brought a change of clothes every day? C: Yes. How were you fed? Did the guard come with the meals, or... C: The guard brought the meals. So your whole life was... contained within that room... C: Yes. Although you signed the billion-year Sea Org contract, you never got to actually engage in any Sea Org activities. Why was this? C: Being held prisoner, it's kind of silly to have your prisoners running around pregnant. Twelve (12 - age)... Questions... Surely the guards, who were watching the door 24/7 had questions, themselves. C: Probably... brainwashed. Describe how David Miscavige would treat you when he came to the room. But partly what he would say to you? C: Wasn't much talk involved. So you automatically knew what was expected of you... He took your clothes off or were you were asked to do so? C: Either. And where would you go in your mind when all this was happening? C: Somewhere else. What did he do to you, as well as rape you? C: He beat me. For no reason whatsoever? C: (shakes head, no) Did he torture you in any way? C: Yes. Can you describe that? C: He strangled me. With his hands or with... C: Hands, belts, whatever. And what about your feet? C: (head hung, eyes downcast - no answer - turns head and looks away)... (camera now focuses on scarred tops of her feet) C: These are the scars that (were) caused by the chains that he used to tie me to the bed. When you were locked in the room, did anybody make any acknowledgement that it was your birthday or Christmas or any other occasions? C: No. He never treated you with any special food, any treats? C: No. Occasionally, knew - well I knew it was Christmas 'cause - could hear - Christmas stuff. Even though Scientologists don't believe in Christmas? C: They still celebrate it. In the commercial sense. C: Yeah. Jim Mathers. Go on his website. He celebrates the sh-t out of Christmas. Mmm-hmm. But it's all about the opulence of it, I think. An excuse to spend money, waste money. C: Or just... to cover their asses - to look normal. Even in Gold Base, in an enclosed area like that, they still celebrated Christmas C: Mmm-hmm. I don't know how they celebrated it, but... Did you have to clean your own room? C: Yep. And what did you do with the waste? Did you have to bag it up and give it to the guard? C: Mmm-hmm. Who oversaw all of your pregnancies? C: It's... whoever was guarding me. Was it always a female guard? C: No. Who taught you how to nurse the children? Because you were only a child, yourself, when you gave birth to the first one... C: They did. The guard did. C: Mmm-hmm. A female guard, I assume. C: (nods) Did this female guard ensure that you kept yourself groomed for David Miscavige? C: Yes. He wanted you to maintain your prepubescent, girl-like appearance? C: Yes. Was there a nurse on call? Any medical supervision? C: No. So you were completely on your own... C: (nods) You were lucky you didn't hemorrhage - or, have other complications arise out of an unsupervised pregnancy. C: Be lucky if I had... In what way? C: I wouldn't be here. Did you at least get to name your children? C: They were named, but - it wasn't my choice. Who named them? C: David did. Upon birth? C: Yes. So he would tell you, this is his name, and you had to go with that? C: Yes. Not like I was excited to name "rape" babies. Did, ehm, the instinct of motherhood kick in, despite them being the products of rape? C: Yes. You cared for them, nursed them for six weeks at a time... C: Yep. Can you describe how it was when you had to let them go? C: Horrifying. After having bonded with them. And then shortly thereafter you were pregnant once again? C: Yeah, I was raped throughout my pregnancies... C: I got to keep my three eldest for six weeks... at a time, and then my two youngest were kept with me... During this time you gave birth to a baby girl. This child you didn't get to nurse for the six weeks they used to allow you. What happened there? C: David was angry. She was a girl. Took her away... And you never saw her... C: Never saw her again. What do you think happened to her? Do you think she was raised like the other boys who were taken away from you? C: I don't think so. I don't know for sure. And how was it, do you think, you were allowed to have the two youngest boys stay with you? C: Not sure (shakes head no), either. Did he rape you whilst they were in the room with you? C: Yes. But they were too young to know what was going on? C: Thank God. And why was he angry upon the birth of the girl? C: Of the girl? And what did he do? C: Just... wrapped her up and took her out of there. So she was the only child you didn't get to nurse. How did this make you feel? C: ...Sad. And what do you think became of this little girl? C: Nothing good. And why do you feel that way? C: ...(I) just do. C: ...I need to break. Did you ever get to see your sons as they were growing up? C: Not in person, no. You got to see photographs of them. C: For a little while. Who brought the photographs, the guards or David Miscavige? C: David. So he did show you some sort of kindness, or compassion? C: What's kind about that? So... C: There's nothing compassionate about that! He brought you photographs of your - C: There's nothing kind or compassionate! He brought you photographs of your children. For what reason, to taunt you? C: I don't... ... ... It wasn't kindness. And were all the rapes accompanied by a beating? C: Most of them. And what reason would he have to beat you? You were completely at his will. C: Not a rational question. When you put up resistance against the repeated rapes, what did David Miscavige do to you? C: He beat me, and cut me on my legs. Can you tell me more about the scars on your feet? C: ...From being chained to the bed. I have a hard time explaining them away to medical staff, when they go to start an I-V and what not... What else did he do besides rape you? Did he just leave straight away? C: No, sometimes he would curl up beside me and go to sleep. But he was sleeping. He may have been needed, you know, for the course of his - his job. But people knew where he was. They knew that there was a 27-year-old man - 28-year-old man - laying with an - laying with a 12-year-old, and they were keeping watch on this? C: Yeah. How do you think they justified that? Because he was in such a powerful position and they thought he deserved it? C: I'm not sure... Shelly Miscavige played a certain role in your life, when you were imprisoned at Gold Base. Can you describe some of that? C: Occasionally, he would... bring her with him. And she would do what? C: She would sit and watch him rape me. Did you ever ask Shelly Miscavige for help? C: Many times. Would she ever respond to you? C: No. So she'd just stare at you. C: Mmm-hmm. Do you think she was getting some slight - type of thrill out of this? C: Don't know. Did you ever think you were going to escape? What kept you going? C: My babies. Even though you only got to see them for six weeks at a time? C: ...(didn't) matter. What about the younger two? You obviously got to spend more time with them if - the female guard was able to, ehm, get them for you... C: (To have face-?-), they stayed with me, (he never took them.?.) Why do you think that was? C: I don't know... So the three - the three boys that remained in Scientology's Gold Base, do you think they're in the Sea Org now? C: (shrugs) Probably. Do you think the health problems you have now were contributed to by Scientology's disregard for conventional medicine? C: Yes. You had arrhythmia as a child that was left - that was left untreated? C: (nods yes) Because of the neglect of certain medical conditions you had as a child, such as arrhythmia, you're now suffering, ehm, the consequences of that, today. Can you describe some of your ailments? Some of the trauma you experienced? C: I have heart failure. Um, through PTSD I have adrenal insufficiency, and hypothyroidism, which makes it hard to overcome infections. So you're regularly in and out of hospital? C: Yes. How did you finally escape from Gold Base, after having spent ten years in captivity there? C: A guard got me out. A female guard? C: Yes. How did she arrange safe passage for you? C: I don't know. Describe how it went down. C: How would I even know how she arranged it? I wasn't with her. Okay, can you - can you describe how it went down? C: She just got me out of my room one night and into the back of a van and... (a good-bye wave) And she also um - brought your two youngest kids for you? C: Yeah. And the three of you escaped together? C: Yes. You and your two sons? Where did she bring you? Out of the state... C: Yeah - out of the country. And, where did she bring you to? C: Amanda Knight(?) farm. And, they raised you. C: Yes. No, I was already raised... Yeah, well... C: I was 21. What are they going to do to raise me? Okay. So they brought you to a Mennonite farm, at the age of 21, with your two youngest boys. What did the Mennonites do for you? C: ...(no answer yet) They educated you the rest of the way, in what you missed out on? C: (Th - Oh...) Some of the - they stop their schooling at grade 8, so... And they provided a home for you. C: Yep. Your two youngest boys, because of the circumstances around their birth - ehm - don't have birth certificates, so how was it they were - they were educated? C: They home-schooled them. And to this day have you gotten birth certificates? C: In the process. Okay. She gave you safe passage with the help of a driver, I'm sure... C: (nods) Mmm-hmm. At least. And your two youngest boys. How did you feel, making this escape? Were you scared? Were you excited? You're glad to get away from the abuse? C: Scared. Did you protest her taking you away, or were you willing to go with it? C: I protested. So she forced you. C: Yes. Do you think she went back to Gold Base after delivering you? C: She said she was going to. She would have gotten into a great deal of trouble - possibly even disposed of - because she knew too much. She knew what was going on. C: Likely. Where did she deliver you? What kind of a safe - what - did she deliver you to a safe house, or an ex-Scientologist, or what was the situation? C: It's... They initially just - the motel room, and, then, with some people on a farm. And who were these people? So, the final destination, when you were assisted to escape, was where? C: That Mennonite farm. And the Mennonites looked after you? C: Yep. And they introduced you to the religion or faith you practice to this day? C: Yes. Because of you being imprisoned uh - from such a young age, you missed out on a great deal of education. How did you catch up? Did the Mennonites bring you up to speed, because I understand they... stop education at a certain point, grade 8, did you say? C: Yes. But they helped me do correspondence... They taught you all the necessary life skills? C: Mmm-hmm. After that I went to college. So you've lived for the last 20 years with this secret buried. You've been married, managed to keep it from your husband, and your fiends. How did you manage to do this? C: Out of fear, mostly. Fear of what? C: David. Do you think he's capable of harming you to this day? C: Absolutely. Why, after all this time, did you decide to come forward with your story? C: Because I'm sick. Why did this motivate you? C: Because I don't want to die, knowing what I know. David Miscavige kept you prisoner for ten years. Now there's no way he could have done this without enlisting the help of a great deal of people to cover his butt - keep his secrets. How many people do you think there were involved? C: (shakes head - don't know) The guard at the door. How many of those? C: Over ten years? Uh - 30 or 40. Different guards. Have you ever approached the producers of the Aftermath and Mike Rinder, about your story? C: I have. And how was the response to that? C: Ridicule. Why? If those people think that he's capable of beating the staff, why wouldn't they think he was capable of what he did to you? C: Probably because he - they had a hand in it? When you first arrived on the anti-Scientology scene, you were greated with a great deal of scorn and doubt. How did this make you feel, seeing as you were confiding in people who were essentially on the same page as yourself? C: Upset, angry. What kind of things did they say to you? C: ...They told me that I was a liar, they told me to go kill myself, that I was too unattractive to be raped. I don't know how you can be attractive at the age of 11. Which is the age David Miscavige first raped you. And what age were you when you gave birth to the first of your six children? C: It was four days after my 12th birthday. And you have sent a request to Ron Miscavige, David's father, for a DNA sample, so that you can prove what you're saying is true about the paternity of your children. How was this request to Ron Miscavige received? C: He refuses to do it. So, why would he wish - Why would Ron Miscavoge, a man who is now, eh - campaigning against the cult of Scientology - why would he wish to protect is rapist and pedophile son? C: Well, because Ron is a rapist, himself. Okay. What happened there? C: David made his story go away - paid off the woman he raped. That was whilst he was in the Sea Org, yes? C: Yes. Yeah. You first emerged on the anti-Scientology activism scene about two years ago? 2017? C: Yeah After you emerged on the anti-Scientology activism scene, the cult themselves made contact with you. What did they say? C: They wanted to give me money. For what reason? C: To be quiet. You only told a few people, and, through private channels, but you didn't broadcast the abuse that happened to you on a public forum. So how did they find out? Uh, but you were confiding in only a small number of people. C: I don't know. Um. Why didn't you accept the money? C: I wouldn't. You've been away from Scientology for more than twenty years after your escape. How do you think they found your details in order to contact you? C: I don't know for sure. The day after I got put on the transplant list. Two and a half years ago? That's when the messages started? C: Yeah So do you think that system was hacked? C: Possibly. A little suspicious. How would they know that you were on a transplant list? C: I don't know. They shouldn't. What were the initial messages you received from the cult, when you first started speaking to people? C: Offers of money. And when you declined? C: Then things got nasty. What kind of things were said? Jim Mathers, a major Scientology donor being one of them. What kind of messages is Jim Mathers sending you? [(30:54) photo of Jim Mathers with shirt pulled up] [(30:57) photo of Jim Mathers] C: Explicit ones. [(31:06) Jim Mathers sends photo of his erect penis and the caption: "Pre cum dropping onto your lips.] Such as... C: Disgusting pictures. Of himself? C: Yes. What is he doing? C: Playing with himself. And the idiot was dumb enough to let one of his very distinctive shirts fall into the line of the lens of the camera, wasn't he? So it can be identified... C: Yes, it can. Have you ever tried to make contact with your parents? C: Folks haven't, but... What about your eldest br - your old - what about your brothers? C: For them, too. And to no avail... C: (shakes head no) Have you asked any - anybody in the anti - in the ex-Scientology community? C: (shakes head no) Do they know them? C: No. You haven't asked? C: (shrugs) I've asked the occasional person - really don't have much time to ask anyone, before everybody... kicked me to the curb, so... Your five older brothers more than likely got absorbed into Scientology seeing as you were pressured into joining the Sea Org by your parents. Do you remember their names? C: Jackson, James, Justin, Marcus and Carl. So if any of the old-timers out there... they may know something about the whereabouts of these boys. Well they're men now in their 50's, possibly. What do you want from telling your story? C: Nothing. You don't want justice? C: I want justice, yeah, but I don't want money or anything. Well now Scientology critics have been coming back saying that there are holes in your story, that you're a crazy person, that you're telling lies, that it's one big hoax, that you're gaslighting people. What do you have to say to those people? C: Calling a woman a crazy leader - lady, is the oldest trick in the book. It's just another way to bury the truth. A well-known Scientology critic, by the name of - well let's just call him, "T. O." (Tony Ortega) has been saying that you contacted him two years ago, and that you wanted to sell your story, and that you were hooked up to a - a machine that was impregnat- impregnating you at Gold Base. How do you respond to these allegations? C: It has absolutely nothing to do with money. And as for the preposterous allegation he made about a machine at Gold Base? C: Hooked up to machines and then, supposedly, a microchip in my ear? That's... That's been said about you? C: That's... going a little far. So I think the only machine was David Miscavige - was impregnating you. C: Yes. Well, "T. O." or "T. Ho," is on Suzy Snowflake's payroll, as you know, and Suzy Snowflake is, uh, an independent auditor, and she preys on vulnerable defectors from Miscavige's cult, and offers them independent auditing or forwards them on to other independent Scientology auditors. So, "T.O." is in her employment, and he can't stray too far off the - the narrative that she dictates, or he's on the scrap heap. C: Doesn't surprise me. What do you have to say to these so-called critics of Scientology who believe that David Miscavige will - would only go so far - he wouldn't, you know, stoop to the level he did with you. What do you have to say to them when they call you "crazy"? You reached out to these people two years ago, looking for their help, looking for their assistance, and made stories up about you, and sent you on your way. C: They've - I've looked to them for help and they just drove me away. Still driving me away. I still feel driven away. I'm not going anywhere. Another ex-Scientologist who still very much has kool-aid in his blood. Let's just call him Aaron L-S or Aaron S-L or whichever double-barreled, pretentious, waspy name he likes to use. He has been saying that you're a crazy person, that anybody who talks to you is exploiting a mentally ill woman. He has somehow appointed himself as chief spokesperson and spooning partner of the former head of the Office of Special Affairs. What do you have to say to him, in response to these labels he's put upon you? C: I haven't spoken with this particular person. He was barely born when his so-called buddy was in the special affairs office. You escaped with your two youngest children. So obviously, the other four children - or definitely three of them, were absorbed into the Sea Org, because they had no birth certificates. C: That's likely what happened. So surely the former members who are now speaking out, who were based at Gold in California... Surely they know of these children. They didn't just spring out of nowhere... C: ...I'm sure they do. And yet they won't entertain any of your conversations with them. C: No. So you think it's too close to the bone for them... C: (nods yes) ...to be high-ranking in Scientology ultimately means that you were a criminal, and they're hiding what happened to you. C: There. What do you have to say to the likes of Mike Rinder, or any of those former, high-ranking, ex-Scientologists, who were on Gold Base around the time of your captivity? C: You knew what was happening to me, and you've done nothing. You know I'm still out here and you ignore me. Why do you think they're ignoring you? C: Probably for their own financial gain. So they reckon that if they don't touch stories like yours, they can maintain their ticket on the gravy train, and not take down $cientology? C: That's right.
